Lockout-Tagout (LOTO) safety procedures are designed to protect workers from accidental exposure to hazardous energy sources during maintenance, servicing, or repair of machinery and equipment. LOTO involves isolating energy sources such as electrical, mechanical, hydraulic, pneumatic, and thermal energy to prevent unexpected startup or release of stored energy. The process typically begins by shutting down the equipment and disconnecting it from the power source. A lock is then placed on the energy-isolating device to physically prevent it from being turned on, and a tag is attached to warn others that the equipment is under maintenance and should not be operated. Only the person who placed the lock and tag is authorized to remove them after verifying that the system is safe to operate. LOTO procedures help prevent serious injuries caused by accidental machine startup or the release of hazardous energy, ensuring a safe working environment for maintenance personnel.
